1. Focal cerebral ischemia – Peri-infarct zone and remote effects

Research and experimental approach

Research in the MultiModal Imaging (MMI) group investigates experimental and clinical stroke (focal ischemia) in the acute, subacute and chronic phase. After occlusion of brain arteries, injury processes are identified and related to long-term structural and functional deterioration and also to recovery processes.

2. Cognitive behavioural paradigms and metabolic imaging (Behavioural PET)

Research and experimental approach

In our behavioural laboratory we study mainly cognitive and functions but also motor, emotional and social behaviour in rats. Various paradigms are applied, depending on the object of the investigation.

Since rats are nocturnal animals, they are kept in an inverse day-night rhythm. This allows the animals to be tested in their activity phase but during the day, under red or infrared light. The rats are motivated to cooperate exclusively through food rewards. We never use punitive stimuli such as electric shocks.
