Sherman Award für Prof. Dr. Wolf-Dieter Heiss
After having received the Wepfer Award on the ESC in May 2011, his lifework in stroke research will be honored with the David G. Sherman Lecture Award of the American Stroke Association in February. Thus, more than 40 years of experimental and clinical research are being acknowledged.
From 1982 – 2005, Wolf-Dieter Heiss was Professor of Neurology and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Cologne as well as Director of the Department of General Neurology at the MPI in Cologne. During this period of time notably his PET-studies led to an improved understanding of the biochemical and physiological processes after stroke incidents. This knowledge was the basis for establishing new therapeutic measures after brain infarct. His list of publications contains about 500 articles as well as approximately 80 book contributions. His research results can be found in numerous medical textbooks.
At the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans (February 2012, 1-3), Wolf-Dieter Heiss will give a 30 minutes lecture on “The role of PET for translational research in stroke”.
